The project Retold

INTRODUCTION

In collaboration with the National Herritage Board of Singapore, our team was tasked to create an installtion for Singapore Night Festival that  creatively explore innovation in the space of tradition and the future of heritage through contemporary innovative methods of engagement.

Retold is an interactive light installation that evokes nostalgic memories of the colourful past of Bras Basah in the 1980s as a thriving street of bookshops.

ABOUT PROJECT

The team proposed a 1:1 scale of a frame, representing old bookshops that used to line the streets of Bras Basah. The bookshelves will illuminate and increase in light intensity as more people approach the installation. The purpose of this interaction is to simulate the bustling bookshops back in the day when it was always crowded with people, highlghting that the presence of people brings life to bookshops.

However, with the restriction made by the current pandemic, our team decided to create a scaled down prototype and a digital installation so that all will still be able to enjoy!

THE DESIGN

There are 4 major components in our design: Frame, Bookshelves, Book Modules and Platform. Here is a brief summary of the design components.

THE PROTOTYPE

Due to the restrictions faced from the current pandemic, the team decided to scale down our installation and instead produce a protoype as a "proof-of-concept".

Here in this prototype, a kinect sensors movement of people and a books will light up according to the motion and the number of people around.
